DCPS Honor Ensembles

What

The DCPS Honor Ensembles will return this year at the event date of March 25 & 26, 2022! We will feature hundreds of DCPS students from all 8 wards. In partnership with Washington Performing Arts, DC Honor Ensembles will feature an elementary instrumental components as well as a secondary ensemble.

Covid-19 Update:

We have been soliciting feedback and tracking the impacts the most recent COVID variant has taken on our schools and especially in-person ensemble learning. We heard from many teachers that concerts had to switch to virtual, or that students have been in and out of quarantine. Additionally, there has been added challenges from 4x4 scheduling that has prevented some ensembles from continuing into the Spring. The traditional, in-person concert will not take place this school year to meet the needs of our schools.

Our partners at Washington Performing Arts are identifying other ways in which they can support your ensembles and music programs. Be on the lookout for more information in the next few weeks.

Barring any additional impacts from COVID, we do hope you join us at the  2022 Performing Arts Festival, which is still slated to take place in May. Registration will open next week. Additionally, we’d like to emphasize that the Honor Choir portion for elementary and middle schools students will still take place.

DCPS Elementary Honor Ensembles x Finding Rhythm: A Journey Through The Musical Brain

Finding Rhythm: A Journey Through The Musical Brain is an educational curriculum for elementary students, based on the children's musical that fuses brain science with an original score inspired by Washington DC's Go-Go music. A Growing Brains Production featuring D.C. artists, Finding Rhythm teaches children how rhythm grows the brain, builds skills in listening, empathy and cooperation, and helps them find the source of their individual power and their connection with community.

Sign up below to enroll in the "Mini PhD" for one of your classes (3rd-5th grade), which include 3 in-person sessions during 3 consecutive weeks with Dr. Jessica and master teaching artists, West African dancer Sylvia Soumah.

After the "Mini PhD," your class will be invited to perform the final song "Soul. Beat. Connection" in the 2022 DCPS Honor Ensembles!

Teacher Composer

Honor Ensemble will feature a short piece (under 4 minutes) written by our very own DCPS Composer(s). The composer can be one of our music teachers or the music teacher leading his/her group of composition students. By featuring our DCPS composer(s), we celebrate the talent of both teachers and students.

Your work will be commissioned by the Washington Performing Arts (WPA). Two composers/conductors will be selected for this project.
